February 2007 Quiz Answers and Discussion
What was the trick in the quiz? This quiz is a copy of the March 2006 quiz. Wanted to see if any one would notice, but no one mentioned it.
There was a tie for first with 6/6 correct and both gave good discussions of their bids: Zandy Rizzo and Priscilla Kim. There was a five-way tie for third place with 5/6 correct. We had a record number of entries, ten in all, thanks for participating!
Partner opens 1S, what do you bid?
Answer – 2 Spades
You have 8 points and 4 spades, (9+ spade fit) so you can bid 2S
Answer – Pass
You only have 4 points
Answer – 4 Spades
With 6 Spades, your side has 11+ Spades. Shut out the competition from bidding with this 4S preemptive bid. Some bid 2S or 3S, but 4S is best
Answer – 3NT - You have 13 points, enough for game, but only 2 Spades. 2H is a possible bid, but a 5 card Heart suit would be better. Most of the students are learning to go right to game with this type hand, so 3NT seems best.
Answer – 1NT
You have only 2 Spades and 7 points. Not enough for spade support or game invitation.
Answer – will accept two answers, 2 Diamonds or 2NT
You have 12 points and 5 nice Diamonds so you could bid 2D, or you could invite to game with 2NT, but I think your bad clubs makes 2D a better bid.
